Water quality is determined by a number of chemical, physical, and biological factors. Issues affecting the quality of your water can be naturally occurring or created by human activity. Issues can be found in both well and municipally supplied water.
The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), enacted by Congress in 1974, is the main federal law ensuring the quality and safety of America’s drinking water. The EPA sets national standards for drinking water to protect against health effects that your municipality must adhere to. Although the EPA ensures the safety of your drinking water, it does not regulate other factors that can impact the quality of your water. The EPA does not monitor or regulate aesthetic issues, such as hardness, bad taste and odor that can negatively impact water quality.
Hard water is water that has a high mineral content. It’s a natural result of minerals like calcium and magnesium and it can be present in well water and municipal water. The hardness of water is measured in grains per gallon (gpg) and the effects of hard water can be tough on your home, your body and your wallet:
Using chlorine is one method water treatment facilities use to keep water free of bacteria and harmful organisms. However, studies indicate that some aspects of this disinfection method may pose some health risks. Trihalomethanes are one of the more dangerous byproducts of chlorine. Inhaling THMs can affect the body’s central nervous system and cause abnormalities to the liver and kidneys.
Bottled water is not necessarily safer than tap water and more than half of all bottled water is simply processed/filtered tap water. With a reverse osmosis system, you can produce similar results (on a much smaller scale) right in your own kitchen.
Water softeners remove hardness mineral from your water through a process called ion exchange. The heart of a water softener is a mineral tank which is filled with resin/beads that capture the hardness minerals (calcium & magnesium) and replace them with sodium ions. Hard water moves into the mineral tank and the calcium and magnesium ions are attracted to the beads. The sodium ions are displaced and go into the water. Once the beads are saturated with calcium and magnesium, the unit regenerates reversing the water flow to flush the hardness minerals out of the tank and recharge the resin with sodium ions.
Although sodium is used to soften water, one of the biggest misconceptions is that it will make the water taste salty. The amount of salt per gallon going through the machine is so minuscule that you would not taste it when it is running properly. For example, an 8oz glass of water with a hardness of 15 grains per gallon contains 28.12 mg of sodium compared to a glass of skim milk that contains about 120 mg of sodium. If you softened water tastes salty your system is not functioning properly and you should call us for a no-charge evaluation.
Reverse Osmosis Systems will remove common chemical contaminants (i.e. minerals & metals), including sodium, chloride, copper, chromium, and lead. It is by far the most convenient and cost effective method to remove lead from your drinking water. Distillation Systems will remove common chemical contaminants including lead as well, but distillation is a slow and energy intensive method of water purification.
